The family of Ashu Thomas Ebay
At the beginning (1991) we thought that we would only give help to institutions. Many individuals should benefit from that. But then we were confronted with desperate individual situations of people who are near to us. We could not ignore that. Now many people come and hope that we can give them a helping hand. If we are convinced that the person really needs help and if we are able to, we try to help.
The story of Ashu Thomas:
His brother Tom worked for us in many projects. He always did good work, was reliable, straight forward – a simple and nice person. Thomas, Tom and a friend were working in their farm when a serious storm threw one of the big trees on the small hut were they took shelter. Tom died on the spot. The tree crashed Thomas leg. They carried him to the catholic hospital in Nguti. They said they have to cut the leg. His wife cried and begged and then they tried and operated the leg several times and succeeded. The family had to go for big loans to make up the costs of the operations. When the cacao price was high there was nobody to work in Thomas cacao farm. His wife tried and succeeded to harvest some cacao. When we came in 2002 we helped Thomas and his family with some money. This year Prof. Richard Goebel gave him money for orthopaedic shoes (one leg is shorter than the other) and Wilhelm Neef paid his share at MACEFCOOP. His daughter got a scholarship at PHS. The family is very happy - a new chance in life.
