The health project

The health situation in Manyu is terrible. The hospitals lack almost everything. Instruments for a proper diagnose like x-ray, ultrasound … are not there. This year we had the chance to take Prof. Dr. Richard Goebel along. He is a Gynaecologist. Till last year he was the head of the gynaecology department at the big church hospital in Oberhausen. He was supposed to go to Liberia with “doctors without boarders”, but the project turned out to be too dangerous. Prof. Goebel said that he gave the kind of instruments they use for operations to the museum 20 years ago. Besides the lack of equipment the medical institutions also lack cooperation. So one of our aims was to bring the four medical institutions of the region together 1. Government Hospital Mamfe, 2. Presbyterian Church hospital Manyemen, 3. Catholic hospital Nguti and Mbakang health station of the Full Gospel Mission. We activated two second hand ultrasound machines and Dr. Goebel held together with the young German internist Ulrike Kohlmeyer from Manyemen a seminar about practical ultrasound diagnostic for doctors and medical workers of the four institutions in the government hospital Mamfe. Dr. Oben, the head of the hospital is also the chief of Mamfe.

Remark (2006): The General Hospital in Mamfe town has been renovated with the elp of the Europeen Union and the German GTZ. The three medical sudents from Germany who did part of their “Famulatur” there reported, that they where quite impressed of the work done by Dr. Oben and his team . Anyhow that does ot mean that the problems are solved. The situation of the poor people especiallyin the rural areas is still terrible. Many pregnant women are still not examined. Especially they and the small children need help. Otherwise many are still going to die because of small reasons. More about this problem in future.
